Description
Guanjiang Shou troupes are one of Taiwan’s most popular ritual performance troupes that may be seen all over Taiwan at traditional folk religion / Taoist gatherings. With their fiercely painted faces, protruding fangs and powerful, choreographed performances, they may be described as the god’s bodyguards who also expell demons and chasing away plagues.
Guanjiang Shou conventionally have large protruding eyebrows, long sideburns, and fiercely painted faces. Protruding canines have become their hallmark, and are worn to reveal their aggressive nature. Their clothing is based on the uniforms of ancient generals with helmets, shoulder armour, and protective skirt, all decorated with imperial decorations. Straw sandals are an important part of their attire as they have the ability to repel evil. They carry instruments used for punishing criminals.
At the centre is General Sun is the green faced Guangjiang Shou who carries a trident and is the troupe leader. flanked by General’s Zeng carrying a fire stick and stocks and chains, and Sun holding a tiger placard and manacles. The generals have the ability to discern human’s virtues and evils. If red faced General Zeng finds a virtuous person he will increase their lifespan, whereas, green faced General Sun decreases the lifespan of wicked people.
