Description
Beneath Vincent Van Gogh’s "Head of a Peasant Woman” (1885) hides a secret. His first self-portrait. The self-portrait was discovered in 2022 by art conservationists at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art on the back of the work, covered by layers of glue and cardboard, using x-ray studies. Prior to this piece, Van Gogh’s first self portrait was believed to be “Self-Portrait with Dark Felt Hat at the Easel” (1886).
As part of the development of our 3D printed Vincent Van Gogh Self-Portrait NeoMaster™, we processed the x-ray of Vincent van Gogh's “Head of a Peasant Woman” (1885) to separate the exterior and interior pieces, leaving only the trace of the hidden interior piece, revealing the outline of Van Gogh.
We then colourised the underlying processed x-ray using using SDXL ControlNet guided depth map, line-art, and HED edge maps, with AI Van Gogh image-to-image translation. Heightmap generation, and 3D printing were subsequently performed to generate the lost work, which was shown in May 2024 at VivaTech 2024, Paris, on the AI Avenue and Discovery Stage. This NFT piece is released as a limited 1/1 edition.
