Description
Beneath Adrian Vanson’s 1589 portrait of Sir John Maitland, the 1st Maitland of Thirlestane, hides a ghostly portrait believed to be of Mary Queen of Scots. In this work, we used a set of Vanson’s paintings with court paintings of a similar era, to train NVIDIA’s pix2pixHD model. The model was trained to map between paintings and edgemaps of paintings. We manually corrected the grayscale X-radiograph of Sir John Maitland, to separate and reveal a greyscale image of the underlying painting of Mary Queen of Scots. We then ran inference on a set of modified edgemaps of the underlying painting, creating a set of possible reconstructions of the Mary Queen of Scots, shown in the animation. The work featured as part the Computer Vision Art Gallery at CVPR 2021. The piece has yet to be produced as a 3D printed NeoMaster. This Research and Development piece is released as a set 8 editions.
