Lena Walker Queen

AWARE led the fight against the American Medical Association (AMA) and unnecessary surgery, and was central to the anti-war movement during the 1991 Gulf War. Lena Walker made a regular appearance on the WLIB Gary Beard Show and WBAI Radio, and AWARE slowly developed through associations with several black groups, including Women in Limbo and the Harlem Reproductive Action Center. AWARE played a key role in bringing out the voices of black women in the anti-war movement. Lina coined the phrase "Our war is not here in the Persian Gulf".
