Description
This piece depicts The Centennial Square without a trace of occupation, in a desert. There is only a golden hand, emerging from the sand with a broken chain in it. Some people are around. The figure holding the flag symbolizes a tribute to Lat Dior Ngone Latyr Diop. Following this discovery, men would have decided to build The Centennial Square at this location, because the hand was a sign of independence and prosperity where humans can express themselves freely. In a second time, the districts of Dakar were formed around the boulevard.
This hand rising from the ground symbolizes progress, emergence and progress. The chain represents the past and every events that served to forge the future. The hand that was chained underground was able to break the it and dig itself out. This shows that past events are part of history, and that we must learn from them in order to move forward. And through this discovery, humans has understood that the lessons of the past help to better forge himself.
