Description
A good friend and I were whale spotting with our drones at a place called long reef and thought we had struck out. Just as we were about to leave we spotted some spouts not far from where we were and they were coming up the coast.
They were moving fast. With one battery each we tracked them (not a easy feat but luckily they were in close to the headland) and I managed to get a few good shots and some footage.
Finding a pod of six was a huge rush and we couldn’t believe our eyes. The reason they were swimming so fast was they were on what is known as a ‘bull run’ The males all chase the lead female for miles to display their stamina and strength. Some other drone photographers spotted the same pod about 150km north still charging half an hour later.
Capturing this rare moment was an incredible experience and one I will never forget.
